Question
Download Solution PDFA man swims 4 km upstream in 5 hours and 16 km downstream in 5 hours. What is the speed of the stream?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFGiven:
4 km upstream in 5 hours
16 km upstream in 5 hours
Concept used:
Upstream = v - u
Downstream = v + u
v = Speed of the man
u = speed of the stream
Calculation:
We know that,
Speed = Distance/Time
16 km downstream in 5 hours
v + u = 16/5 ----(1)
4 km upstream in 5 hours
v - u = 4/5 ----(2)
From eq 1 and eq 2
2v = 20/5 = 4 km/h
⇒ v = 2 km/h
⇒ u = 1.2 km/h
∴ The speed of the stream is 1.2 km/h
