Question
Download Solution PDFAccording to Kennedy the silting action in channel is due to ?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFExplanation:
Kennedy's theory:
Kennedy study the silting and flow behavior of Upper Bari Doab Canal system in Punjab and gives following observations:
- Silt supporting power of a channel is due to eddies formed at the bed of channel and reaching to the surface, these eddies formed on horizontal surface.
- Due to eddy formation silt particle subjected to force in upward direction at the same time a force act in downward direction due to its own weight, thus net force acting on the silt particle is zero and silt particle remain in suspension.
-
The velocity of flow at which silt particle remain in suspension and no silting occurs is called critical velocity of flow (V0).
\(V_{o}=C_{1}y^{c_{2}}\) , Where C1 and C2 are constant and depends upon type of silt. (C1= 0.55 & C2 =0.65) and y = Depth of flow
- The above expression is valid for Upper bari doab canal only therefore for other canal a constant termed as critical velocity ratio (m) is given by Kennedy, which depends upon silt grade and type of silt.
- Now Critical Velocity is given by \(V_{o}=0.55my^{0.65}\)
- For canal design Kennedy considered trapezoidal section, While Lacey considered Semi elliptical section.
