Seam Welding Limitations:

  • Seam welding is a resistance welding process in which the weld is made by rotating wheel electrodes. It's commonly used for creating continuous, leak-tight joints.
  • It is especially suitable for materials that are not excessively thick and have good conductivity and heat dissipation properties.

Challenges with Stainless and Coated Steels:

  • Coated Steels: The presence of coatings on steel can interfere with the welding process. Coatings such as zinc or other metals can lead to poor electrical conductivity and can create issues such as splattering, porosity, and inconsistent weld quality.
  • Stainless Steels: Stainless steel has a high electrical resistance and low thermal conductivity. This can make it difficult to control the heat generation and dissipation during welding, leading to issues such as distortion, warping, and the formation of brittle phases in the weld area.
  • Due to these factors, achieving a high-quality seam weld in stainless and coated steels can be challenging and may require additional preparation or alternative welding methods.

Alternative Methods for Stainless and Coated Steels:

  • For coated steels, the coating can sometimes be removed in the area to be welded, or a different welding process such as gas metal arc welding (GMAW) or laser welding can be used.
  • For stainless steels, using methods such as tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding or laser welding can provide better control over heat input and result in higher quality welds.
