If the river is not confined within well defined banks, it is likely to cause floods, bank erosion and change of its course. Such disturbances can be controlled by some methods is called river training work.

Flood Protection: The methods used for protection against floods are called "high water training" or ‘training for discharge’. These are

• Construction of embankments to restrict the river to a narrower channel.
• Increasing the discharge capacity of the river by straightening, widening or deepening.
•  Provision of diversion or escapes from the main channel into a spilling channel for carrying water in excess of the main river course.
• Construction of reservoirs on the river for detaining some flood water
