Descent

Descent can be patrilineal, matrilineal, or bilateral. In a patrilineal society, descent is traced through the male line. This means that a person belongs to their father's descent group. In a matrilineal society, descent is traced through the female line. This means that a person belongs to their mother's descent group. In a bilateral society, descent is traced through both the male and female lines. This means that a person belongs to both their mother's and father's descent groups.

Filiation

Filiation can be biological, adoptive, or social. Biological filiation refers to the social relationship between a parent and child who are related by blood. Adoptive filiation refers to the social relationship between a parent and child who are not related by blood but who have been legally adopted. Social filiation refers to the social relationship between a parent and child who are not related by blood or adoption but who are still considered to be family members.

Complementary Filiation Example

An example of complementary filiation is the relationship between a man and his sister's son in a patrilineal society. In a patrilineal society, descent is traced through the male line. This means that a man's sister's son is not a member of his descent group.
