KRISHI-DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM (DSS) UPSC FAQs

Climate change impacts Indian agriculture by altering rainfall patterns, increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, and affecting crop yields. This can lead to food insecurity and economic instability.

Sustainable agriculture involves farming practices that protect the environment, conserve resources, and ensure long-term agricultural productivity. It is important for maintaining soil fertility, reducing environmental degradation, and ensuring food security for future generations.

Key challenges include fragmented land holdings, low productivity, dependence on monsoons, inadequate access to credit, poor infrastructure, and the impact of climate change.

Major irrigation systems include surface irrigation, drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, and sub-surface irrigation. Each system has its own advantages and is suited to different types of crops and soils.

Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about 58% of India’s population. It contributes around 17-18% to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is essential for food security.
