In September 1948, the newly independent republic of India carried out a police action against the Princely State of Hyderabad, which was referred to as Operation Polo. The operation resulted from the Nizam of Hyderabad's refusal to accede to India after the British left India in 1947. The Nizam of Hyderabad hesitated to align with India following Independence on August 15, 1947. The military intervention in the Hyderabad state was officially labeled as 'Police Action' by the then Home Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The forces of the Nizam surrendered to the Indian Army by September 18.

The relevance of Operation Polo from the UPSC General Studies Paper 1 point of view lies in its significance in integrating princely states into the Indian Union. The integration of princely states was important in India's independence struggle and aftermath.

What is Operation Polo?

Operation Polo was a significant military operation conducted by the Indian Armed Forces in September 1948, which resulted in the annexation of the princely state of Hyderabad into the Indian Union. The operation was launched after the Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, refused to accede his state to India after the country gained independence in 1947.

The Indian Government thought Hyderabad might cause problems because it was in the middle of India and had a lot of Muslim people. Hyderabad also used to be independent, which made it a tricky situation.

  • The Indian Government initially attempted to persuade Nizam to accede to India peacefully, but negotiations failed. 
  • This led to the launch of Operation Polo, which saw the Indian Armed Forces quickly and decisively overpower the Hyderabad State Armed Forces. 
  • The operation lasted just five days and resulted in the accession of Hyderabad to India.

Operation Polo was important because it showed that the Indian Government wanted to keep the country together and protect its borders. They used both talking and fighting to make sure everyone agreed to be part of India. This helped set an example for future situations where India needed to protect its borders.

Historical Background of Operation Polo

Operation Polo played a significant role in shaping Indian Political History. Here is a Historical Background of this operation that one must know: 

  • Hyderabad was a princely state in the center of the Indian subcontinent ruled by the Nizam, Osman Ali Khan. It was the most prominent and wealthiest princely state at the time of India's independence in 1947.
  • During independence, the Indian subcontinent was divided into two countries, India and Pakistan. Princely states could accede to either one or remain independent.
  • Nizam initially wanted to remain independent, but the Indian Government and the Indian National Congress (INC) pressured him to accede to India.
  • The INC argued that Hyderabad, with its sizeable Muslim population, should be part of India, which was also predominantly Hindu.
  • The Nizam resisted the pressure and formed a standstill agreement with Pakistan but not with India, which increased tensions between Hyderabad and India.
