About the SHe-Box Portal

The SHe-Box portal is an IT-enabled complaint management system intended at redressing complaints regarding sexual harassment in the workplace. The portal was launched by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, or MWCD. The SHe-Box portal provides an easy and confidential manner through which women can file complaints regarding instances of harassment. It allows for electronic complaint filing and tracking, thereby increasing transparency in filing complaints and redressal. The portal is part of India's much larger work safety and gender justice ecosystem.

Background of Creation of the SHe-Box Portal

SHe-Box traces its origins in the growing legal and social context regarding women's safety in the workplace. The Vishaka Guidelines held by the Supreme Court of India in 1997 marked an important milestone for issues related to harassment at the workplace since it was decided that all workplaces would need to constitute committees specifically for redressing such issues. Even further impetus was provided by the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013, as it provided a statutory framework for the redressal of complaints.

However, this was accompanied by a glaring requirement for an integrated and easily accessible platform that could address grievances of all women workers cut across sectors and status. The SHe-Box portal was launched on July 24, 2017, with the objective to fulfill this requirement by giving women in India the ability to lodge their grievances without issues of procedural and bureaucratic obstacles.
