About UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is a main body of the United Nations. It focuses on coordinating disaster risk reduction. It assists decision makers worldwide in understanding and addressing risks.

  • Its main objective is to ensure the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. 
    • This is a global agreement adopted in 2015 to guide disaster risk reduction efforts.

UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and India

India is prone to various natural hazards such as earthquakes, cyclones, and floods.

UNDRR actively collaborates with the GoI to strengthen disaster risk reduction efforts in the country. UNDRR's engagement in India focuses on the following:

  • policy support, 
  • capacity building, and 
  • knowledge sharing to enhance disaster risk governance.

UNDRR ARISE India

One important project between UNDRR and India is "ARISE India." The UNDRR ARISE India project is a five-year project. The European Union and the Government of India fund it. 

  • ARISE India is about getting businesses involved in reducing disaster risks. It asks businesses to include strategies for reducing risks in their daily work and supply chains.
  • It is designed to help India reduce disaster risk and build resilience to disasters. 
  • The project is working in the following six states in India:
    • Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
  • ARISE India focuses on four important areas:

Understanding and managing risks

ARISE India helps businesses find out about risks, see what weaknesses they have, and take steps to manage those risks. This helps them know what might happen during a disaster and how to prepare for it.

Planning for business continuity

ARISE India helps businesses make plans to keep working during and after a disaster. This helps them recover faster.

Working together with the government

ARISE India helps businesses and the government work together. They share resources and knowledge to make communities stronger in the face of disasters.

Speaking up and spreading awareness

ARISE India talks to businesses and tells them how important it is to include disaster risk reduction in their work. They make sure businesses know how to help make the country disaster resilient.

About Sendai Framework

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 is a global agreement adopted by 187 countries. This was introduced at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan, in 2015. It sets out a 15-year plan of action to reduce disaster risk and build resilience to disasters.

Key Features of the Sendai Framework

The key features of the Sendai Framework have been given below:

Seven global targets

The framework sets seven goals to be achieved by 2030. These goals aim to lower the following:

  • the number of deaths, 
  • the people affected, and 
  • the damage caused to infrastructure.

Four priorities for action

The Sendai Framework has four important things to focus on. They include:

  • understanding disasters, 
  • making good rules,
