Power factor of Induction Motor

  • The power factor of an induction motor (IM) is typically low when the motor is operating under light load or no load conditions.
  • In induction motors, the power factor tends to be lower at light loads because the reactive power component is relatively higher compared to the active power component.
  • At full load or near full load, induction motors generally exhibit better power factor performance. This is because, under heavy load conditions, the motor operates more efficiently, drawing less reactive power and more real (active) power.
  • So the power factor of an induction motor is low at light loads and tends to improve as the load on the motor increases.
